It is the go-to control component for Halloween animatronic props, pneumatic cylinders, and air-powered scare effects. How they work.
A 5-port valve (also called a 5/2 valve) has five air connections and two flow states. When the solenoid is energised at 12V DC, the valve shifts to direct pressurised air to one side of a double-acting cylinder, while simultaneously exhausting air from the other side — driving your cylinder/prop in one direction. When de-energized, a spring return shifts the spool back, reversing airflow and returning the prop to its resting position. This makes it ideal for any cylinder-driven animatronic effect that needs a quick extend-and-retract cycle.
